Introduction
Library and Information Science Trends and Research: Asia-Oceania Region, co-edited by Professor Amanda Spink and Dr. Diljit Singh, seeks to provide an understanding of the library and information science trends and research in the Asia-Oceania region.

The Asia-Oceania region of the world stretches from Korea and Japan in the north, through China and India, to Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore, and Indonesia, and eastward to Australia and New Zealand. Asia-Oceania is one of the fastest growing regions of the world with a booming population and economy. As the region has developed socially and economically particularly in the last ten years, the field of library and information science has also grown in educational and research developments. In particular, the field is growing rapidly in many countries as libraries and digital information becomes part of people’s everyday social and life processes.

The book seeks to present chapters by a range of scholars who discuss research and educational trends in library and information science in the Asia-Oceania region. The co-editors have extensive experience in this world region. Professor Amanda Spink recently spent five years in the Australian LIS environment and Dr. Diljit Singh, who is based at the University of Malaya in Malaysia, has extensive experience throughout the Asian region. High quality and scholarly book chapters are sought that cover research and education studies, including policy issues, bibliometric studies, user behaviour, educational issues and other aspects related to trends in the LIS field in the Asia-Oceania region.

SUBMISSION INFORMATION
Potential contributors are invited to submit an abstract or a 1-2 page chapter proposal to the book Editors ASAP, detailing the background, motivations and structure of the proposed chapter. Authors will be notified in short order as to the status of their proposal and sent organizational guidelines.

Full chapters should be at least 8,000-9,000 words in length and are due by January 1, 2011. Final revised manuscripts are due on February 1, 2011 for a publication date later in 2011.

Deadline for 2010 Jordan IFLA/OCLC Fellowship is 6 March
The application deadline for the 2010 Jay Jordan IFLA/OCLC Early Career
Development Fellowship Program is 6 March 2009. This program, jointly
sponsored by the American Theological Library Association, the International
Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and OCLC,
provides early career development and continuing education for library and
information science professionals from countries with developing economies.

Up to six individuals, including a theological librarian, are selected for
participation in this intensive five-week Fellowship program. Four weeks are
based at OCLC headquarters in Dublin, Ohio, USA; one week is based at OCLC
in Leiden, Netherlands. The program gives Fellows opportunities to meet with
leading information practitioners, visit libraries, and explore topics
including information technologies, library operations and management, and
global cooperative librarianship.

APPLICATIONS FOR 2009 NOW OPEN

This four-week course organised on behalf of IFLA ALP is now in its ninth
year in New Zealand. The overall theme is information literacy, with special
reference to needs and developments of countries in Asia and Oceania. The
course will cover the basics of information literacy and information
literacy training skills needed by information professionals in a variety of
settings, as well as current and emerging IT applications in libraries.
Classroom participation and hands-on practice will be interspersed with
visits to leading libraries and information agencies in Wellington, the
capital of New Zealand and home to a wide array of 'cutting-edge'
information organisations.

The course will be based primarily at the Victoria University of Wellington
Library and taught by leading educators in library and information
management, as well as practitioners with considerable experience in the
delivery of information literacy programmes.

While the course is purposely small, to allow one-on-one training and
closely monitored IT lab work, there are limited vacancies for fee-paying
students. A fee of US$3000 covers all tuition, course materials and
accommodation in comfortable university housing. Airfares, visas and meals
are an additional expense to be met by successful applicants.

The final selection of applicants will be made no later than the beginning
of August 2009. There is no application form, but potential participants
should send an email message outlining (1) professional education, (2)
professional work experience, (3) level of English ability, (4) reasons for
wishing to attend the course, (5) self-assessed IT capabilities and (6)

Session Theme: Preserving the past - creating the future

The five sub-regions of IFLA's Asia-Oceania Section encompass ethnic groups
and cultures whose rich histories are embodied within written, pictorial and
oral traditions that date back to the beginnings of human civilisation. The
Asia-Oceania Open Session at Milan focuses on the critical role being played
by libraries and other information organisations in Asia-Oceania in
preserving the richness of the past so that their peoples can create a
future that is linked to the past. The theme encompasses both the
practicalities of cultural heritage preservation work to ensure the survival
of the past and the efforts involved in services that focus on helping
individuals and groups make use of those cultural heritage resources to
understand the past to create a better future.

Dedicated to the theme, 'Preserving the past - creating the future', this
session therefore aims to highlight the work of libraries and other
information organisations in Asia-Oceania that contributes to the creation
of better futures by preserving the past. In keeping with the conference's
overall theme, 'Libraries create futures: Building on cultural heritage',
the suggested topics for this Session include, but are not limited to, the
following:
. Utilising the preservation of materials to develop future-oriented,
contextually-based information services in memory institutions

. Understanding how heritage awareness through preserved artefacts
can lead to better understanding of possible future developments in
proactive memory institution services

. Preserving or providing access to images or oral histories that
capture the memories of the participants in unique events of a community's
past and cultural heritage

. Preserving significant cultural heritage resources and providing
unified approaches to making them accessible through the collaborative
efforts of libraries, archives and museums

. Promoting the use of or creation of resources that document the
contributions of minority groups to the development of a community's social,
political, cultural or economic life.

Submissions:

1. The deadline for submitting a detailed, abstract (500 words) and
full author details is 15 December 2008. Selection of papers is based on the
abstract, and presenters will be notified by mid-February 2009 at the latest
whether they have been successful
2. The full paper is due on 1 May 2009 and must be an original
submission not published elsewhere
3. Both abstracts and full papers should be submitted as a MS Word file
by e-mail; fax or post should be used only as a last resort
4. Papers should be of 20 pages maximum, double spaced
5. Papers should be in English with an abstract, and the presenter must
be fluent in English
6. 20 minutes will be allowed for a summary delivery of the paper in
the Conference; the full written paper is not to be read
7. The author(s) should indicate his/her personal full contact details
and include a brief biographical note with the paper. Also, a digital
photograph would be useful.

Selection:

Full abstracts (500 words) should be prepared following the template
provided below. Each abstract will be blind reviewed by members of the
Regional Standing Committee for Asia and Oceania. Abbreviated abstracts or
late submissions will not be considered.

Purpose of this paper

What are the reason(s) for writing the paper (or the aims of the research)?

Design/methodology/approach

How are the objectives achieved? Include the main method(s) used for the
study. What is the approach to the topic, and what is the theoretical or
subject scope of the paper?

Findings

What was found in the course of the work? This will refer to analysis,
discussion, or results.

Research limitations/implications (if applicable)

If research is reported on in the paper, this section must be completed and
should include suggestions for future research and any identified
limitations in the research process.

Practical implications

(if applicable)

What outcomes and implications for practice, applications and consequences
are identified? All papers should have practical applications. What changes
to practice might be made as a result of this research/paper?

What is original/value of paper

What is new in the paper? State the value of the paper and to whom.

The Division of Museums, Arts and Humanities (MAHD) of SLA will reimburse travel and accommodation expenses up to $2,000.00 US for a professional librarian from a non-G8 country to attend the SLA Annual Conference. The awardee will also receive free registration to the conference and to all MAHD ticketed events and will be expected to attend all MAHD programs and events.

ELIGIBILITY

Ø Applicant must be presently working, or have worked within the past two years, in a special or museum library with subject focus in the arts or the humanities. No other disciplines are acceptable.

Ø Applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of a non-G8 country.

Ø Applicant must indicate the amount and source of additional funding which, combined with the Travel Award, will permit them to cover their expenses to attend the Annual Conference.

Ø Applicant must prepare a brief presentation (10 minutes in length) on one’s home institution or special research project pertinent to arts and humanities, which will be delivered at a MAHD meeting at the SLA Conference.

Ø The application should include a current CV, including all contact information, education, and previous library experience.

Ø The applicant will write up to 500 words of narrative in English to address the following:

Description of home institution’s mission

How attendance may benefit the applicant at his/her home institution

Guust van Wesemael Literacy Prize – Call for Applications 2009

Objective

The objective of the Prize is to recognise an achievement in the field of literacy promotion in a developing country. The Prize should preferably be used for follow-up activities such as purchasing targeted collections of appropriate books, but may also be used for other activities such as literacy promotion, training, policy development. The Prize is issued biennially. The focus of the Prize is public library or school library work. Both individuals and library institutions are eligible to apply.

The Prize was established by the lFLA Executive Board in November 1991, to commemorate the late Guust van Wesemael, who was Coordinator of lFLA's Professional Activities from 1979 to 1990 and Deputy Secretary General of lFLA from 1979 to 1991, and his contribution to lFLA's efforts to promote literacy in the developing countries. ln 1996 the Prize was re-established under revised conditions.

Applications

The applications must be accompanied by:

the reasons for application;

a detailed description of the completed project or activity (including a short description of the library, or of the organisation and its activities);

an explanation of how the Prize money would be used;

and a realistic budget.

Candidates are also advised to attach a letter of support from their library association.

The Prize of EUR 2,725 will be paid out in 2 installments: two thirds immediately and one third on submission or a report of how the Prize has been used.

Reporting
Within six months after receipt of the Prize, the winner must submit to lFLA HQ an interim report of the use made of the funds, and the second installment will be paid out. When the project period is finished a final report and a financial statement should be submitted. (The report should be in a form suitable for publication in lFLA Journal).

The application deadline for the 2009 IFLA/OCLC Early Career Development Fellowship Program is 7 March 2008.
This program, jointly sponsored by the American Theological Library Association, the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and OCLC, provides early career development and continuing education for library and information science professionals from countries with developing economies.
Up to five individuals, including a theological librarian, are selected for participation in this intensive five-week Fellowship program. Four weeks are based at OCLC headquarters in Dublin, Ohio, USA; one week is based at OCLC in Leiden, Netherlands. The program includes lectures, seminars and mentoring, and gives Fellows opportunities to explore topics including information technologies, library operations and management, and global cooperative librarianship.

International Master in Digital Library Learning (DILL)

Dill will admit both European and so-called third-country (i.e. non-EU/EEA-EFTA) students. However, only third-country students can apply for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship. More information about the scholarship and the definition of third-country students is found under Scholarship.
Admission Criteria
Requirements for all DILL students:
A degree in Library and Information Science (based on no less than three years of full-time study – 180 ECTS) or equivalent qualifications, such as a degree in another relevant subject.
English skills. Students from non-English speaking countries must have passed:
either IELTS (International English Language Testing System) (minimum score: 5.5 points)
or TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) (minimum score: 550 on the paper based test, 213 on the computer based test, or 79 on the Internet based test).
Not all applicants need to submit a TOEFL or IELTS test certificate. If you are in doubt as to whether or not you may be exempted, please contact the DILL Administration for more information.

Sharing knowledge and building understanding is a common goal for libraries, corporations, governments and countries. IFLA’s KM Section provides an international platform at the 74th World Library and information Congress (WLIC), 10-14 August 2008 in Quebec City, to support the development and implementation of a knowledge management culture in libraries, information centers, and the profession as a whole.
Our theme for the 2008 conference is Knowledge Management: Towards Understanding in the Multi-Cultural World.The KM section is looking for speakers for its 2008 program at the WLIC/IFLA conference. The Science and Technology Libraries Section is planning a two-hour
program in Qu้bec and we invite you to submit an abstract for
presentation. The theme for our meeting is *"Science across Libraries:
**provision of science and technology information resources and services
in diverse settings"*.

Increasingly, information resources and services related to science and
technology are in demand by users beyond traditional contexts and with
varying levels of expertise and knowledge. A variety of libraries and
other information professionals are called upon to design innovative
approaches to meeting this demand. Complicating such efforts, however,
are issues related to science and technology literacy in the general
public, collection development and access issues, and other provision
and source related challenges. Moreover, trends in science and
technology, particularly those of global importance (such as global
warming, the ecological impact of globalization, or information
technology issues in developing countries) can increase demand of
certain resources and challenge the expertise of traditional librarians.

In addition to a keynote speaker, we are seeking three excellent papers
that address the issues surrounding and affecting the provision of
science and technology information resources and services in diverse
settings. Of particular interest are papers that represent perspectives
that will have relevance to an international audience.

Three papers will be selected for presentation. Proposals for papers must be submitted by *14 January 2008*. The proposal should include a title, a 200-400 word
abstract and relevant biographical information of author(s) / presenter(s). Successful proposals will be identified by *14 February 2008* and presenters will be notified.
The full paper is due by *1 May 2008*. We hope that Simultaneous Interpretation will be available for this session, but we strongly recommend that the presentation
slides should be in English, even if the presentation is delivered in one of the other official languages.

THE CONFERENCE
The IFLA annual congress provides an opportunity to present library research and outcomes in Information Technology and Innovation in a multi-disciplinary international forum. The IFLA Information Technology Section invites technologists, librarians and other interested parties working in the field of library systems to submit proposals for papers in a 2-hour session in Quebec.
SESSION THEME

Enabling access to the global library - Small is Beautiful: Distributed deployment of library services for small and special libraries.
THE TOPIC

Open Source, distributed services delivery, web services and smart clients provide new paradigms for delivery of library services technology to small and special libraries. In keeping with the theme of the 74th World Library and Information Congress, "Libraries without borders: navigating toward global understanding" , we invite papers that showcase:

successful models for information technology innovation and service delivery to special libraries (e.g. Digital Libraries)
give demonstrations of how technology innovation is changing paradigms for technology delivery to small and special libraries (e.g. web services, smart clients, mash-ups, library 2.0 delivery, integration of web 2.0 in catalog services)
present case studies in open source application deployment that enhances interoperability between a diverse range of libraries.

SUBMISSIONS
The deadline for submitting a detailed, abstract (500 words) and full author details is 30 January 2008. Selection of papers is based on the abstract, and presenters will be notified by 1 March 2008 at the latest whether they have been successful

The Government Information and Official Publications Section invites submissions for its programme for the 74th International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) World Library and Information Congress 10-14 August 2008 to be held in Qu้bec, Canada ( http://www.ifla.org/IV/ifla74/index.htm). Government, non-governmental and intergovernmental knowledge resources play an important role in our global society. Increasingly these resources are either born digital or are being digitized for enhanced access by people everywhere. Governments at many levels, institutions, non-governmental and international organizations, and individuals are collaborating locally, nationally, regionally and internationally to make these resources available digitally and to ensure that they are properly preserved and archived for sustained use by future generations.

Submissions are invited which discuss collaborative digitization projects that make available historical or current official and/or government resources. Topics covered might include the project’s development, content and content management, use of and adherence to digitization standards and benefits to a globalizing world. Submissions of a more theoretical approach will also be considered.

Four papers will be selected for presentation. Session Theme: LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND ADVOCACY FOR LIBRARIES : BEST PRACTICES IN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION MANAGEMENT
This programme is a collaboration between the Management of Library Association Section (MLAS), the Continuing Professional Development and Workplace Learning Section (CPDWL) and the Action for Development through Libraries Programme (ALP).

GLOBAL LIBRARY ASSOCIATION DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM – GLAD was developed by the Management of Library Association Section (MLAS) and received the approval of IFLA Governing Board in 2006 as a strategic initiative.

The objective of the GLAD Programme is to help to develop a set of skills relating to Library Association Management in order to strengthen the pool of qualified personnel who will potentially manage Library Associations at the local level. This in turn will help to strengthen the pool of potential candidates from which IFLA can draw for leadership positions within the Association.

MLAS, CPDWL and ALP share the mission of the GLAD Programme : to strenghten the management of library associations in order to make associations stronger players in the development of libraries and thus in the development of societies in all parts of the world. This to be achieved through continuous training and development of information professionals.

The World Library & Information Congress/ IFLA General Conference takes place in Qu้bec, Canada, August 10-15, 2008. The overall conference theme is "Libraries without borders: Navigating towards global understanding". As part of the conference program the MLAS, CPDWL and ALP will host a one day session entitled “Leadership skills and advocacy for libraries : best practices in library association management” consisting of
Part 1: presentations and,
Part 2: interactive discussion focused on Library Association Management techniques and principles like leadership skills and advocacy for libraries.

The programme is envisioned as having presentations in the morning with invited speakers allocated 20 minutes presentation time after which there will be 10 minutes of discussion. The afternoon session will take the form of interactive round-table sessions in the afternoon devoted to discussion of problems and solutions.

LIS educators and practitioners are invited to submit proposals for presentations and roundtable sessions that provide practical information which will enhance the ability of participants to become successful Library Association Managers and Leaders. We plan to present best practices from each of the three IFLA regions of Africa, Latin America-Caribbian and Asia–Oceania where ALP has supported succesful projects or actions.

Proposals may focus on, but are not limited to:

THEME: Theoretical Approaches to Research on Libraries as Space and Place
Libraries as space and place have become an important research topic
within library and information science. How can libraries develop into
places promoting community, knowledge sharing, citizenship, confidence
and trust? Such research questions are relevant for public libraries
as well as for academic, government and special libraries, and they
are relevant for digital libraries as well as physical libraries. At
its session in Quebec, the IFLA section on Library Theory and Research
will focus upon research on libraries as space and place. In
particular, we want to examine theoretical approaches when doing
research on this issue, e.g. theories on the public sphere, concepts
and approaches related to social capital, approaches from knowledge
management such as communities of practice, the concept of ?The Third
Place,? etc. Papers discussing the fruitfulness of different
theoretical approaches when researching this topic in general or when
doing research on libraries as space and place in particular contexts,
e.g an academic context or a local community context, are welcomed.
Abstracts in English or French although any IFLA approved language are
welcome. However, availability of simultaneous interpretation into
other IFLA languages may not be possible. Every effort will be made to
provide simultaneous interpretation, or to provide a translation of
the paper for the presentation. The abstracts should amount to
approximately 500 words and should be sent no later than 30 January
2008 to Marydee Ojala (Marydee@xmission.com). Decision on acceptance
of proposals will be made by March 1st. Papers accepted will be due no
later than May 15th.

International Copyright Symposium 21- 22 April 2008
The Book in the Internet Era: Copyright and the Future for Authors, Publishers and Libraries.

Amsterdam will be World Book Capital from the 23rd of April 2008 to the 22nd of April 2009. UNESCO honoured the Dutch capital with this title in recognition of the programme organised by the professional Dutch book sector and literary world, thus ensuring broad support. The international symposium The Book in the Internet Era: Copyright and the Future for Authors, Publishers and Libraries will take place on the eve of this exceptional year-long event.

The origins of copyright can be derived from the authorโ€s right to be recognised as a maker of an original work, and to reap the financial benefits of his creation. Over time however, copyright seems to have become much less of a matter for individual makers and much more an aspect of business within the knowledge and information industry, comprising a whole range of institutions, from universities to Hollywood studios and from libraries to television stations. The economic significance of copyright has therefore increased enormously. Recently, digital developments have brought about fundamental changes for all those involved in the publishing chain, from the author, via the publisher and intermediary to the reader or viewer. This transformation process continues apace.

In view of these significant developments, the Dutch Publishers Association (Nederlands Uitgeversverbond, NUV) the Dutch Writers Guild (Vereniging van Letterkundigen, VvL), the Netherlands Library Forum (FOBID), and the Dutch Foundation for Copyright Promotion (Stichting Auteursrechtmanifestaties, STAM) have taken the initiative to explore specific issues regarding the consequences of digital developments for copyright.

Subdivided into three sessions, the symposium will shed light on this problematic area from the viewpoint of three parties involved in the process: the author, the publisher and the library. The symposium will thus try to interconnect all book related sectors, while underpinning public awareness and interest in copyright.

The guest speakers at this symposium include, among others, Dr. Ernst Hirsch Ballin, Dutch Minister of Justice, Paul Goldstein (Professor of Law at Stanford University), Richard Charkin (Executive Director of Bloomsbury) and James Boyle (Professor of Law at Duke University).
The venue for the symposium is Amsterdamโ€s new Public Library (next to Amsterdam Central Station) and the official language is English.

Session Theme: LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND ADVOCACY FOR LIBRARIES : BEST PRACTICES IN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION MANAGEMENT

This programme is a collaboration between the Management of Library Association Section (MLAS), the Continuing Professional Development and Workplace Learning Section (CPDWL) and the Action for Development through Libraries Programme (ALP).

GLOBAL LIBRARY ASSOCIATION DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM – GLAD was developed by the Management of Library Association Section (MLAS) and received the approval of IFLA Governing Board in 2006 as a strategic initiative.

The objective of the GLAD Programme is to help to develop a set of skills relating to Library Association Management in order to strengthen the pool of qualified personnel who will potentially manage Library Associations at the local level. This in turn will help to strengthen the pool of potential candidates from which IFLA can draw for leadership positions within the Association.

MLAS, CPDWL and ALP share the mission of the GLAD Programme : to strenghten the management of library associations in order to make associations stronger players in the development of libraries and thus in the development of societies in all parts of the world. This to be achieved through continuous training and development of information professionals.

The World Library & Information Congress/ IFLA General Conference takes place in Qu้bec, Canada, August 10-15, 2008. The overall conference theme is "Libraries without borders: Navigating towards global understanding". As part of the conference program the MLAS, CPDWL and ALP will host a one day session entitled “Leadership skills and advocacy for libraries : best practices in library association management” consisting of
Part 1: presentations and,
Part 2: interactive discussion focused on Library Association Management techniques and principles like leadership skills and advocacy for libraries.

The programme is envisioned as having presentations in the morning with invited speakers allocated 20 minutes presentation time after which there will be 10 minutes of discussion. The afternoon session will take the form of interactive round-table sessions in the afternoon devoted to discussion of problems and solutions.

LIS educators and practitioners are invited to submit proposals for presentations and roundtable sessions that provide practical information which will enhance the ability of participants to become successful Library Association Managers and Leaders. We plan to present best practices from each of the three IFLA regions of Africa, Latin America-Caribbian and Asia–Oceania where ALP has supported succesful projects or actions.

I am happy to announce the Travel Awards for attendance at the 2008
conference in San Diego, CA, March 12-16. Again we are announcing the
2008 awards earlier than in the past, with an earlier deadline for
submission. Our goal with this last year was to be able to inform the
recipients much sooner, who in turn can register and get in to workshops
and other events that may fill up early. The new deadline for receipt of
applications will be Wednesday, November 14, 2007 (5pm Pacific Time).
Recipients will be informed no later than Wednesday, November 28, 2007.

Ingenta Research Award
Purpose
The Ingenta Research Award is given annually by the Library Research Round Table of the American Library Association to support research projects about acquisition, use, and preservation of digital information.
Example areas of research include:
* The analysis of online journal usage data to develop conclusions and predictive models which may be used by libraries and publishers in determining future behavior

* An investigation of the issues surrounding institutional archiving, particularly costs, preservation and securing the participation of faculty

* A study of information seeking behavior of readers and/or authors

* The development of future models for verifying the relative usefulness of publications

Other topics related to digital publications will also be considered.

Eligibility

Applications are welcome from practicing librarians, faculty and students at schools of library and information science, and independent scholars.

Criteria

The Ingenta Award Jury will evaluate applications on the basis of the following

criteria:

1. Appropriateness of the proposed project to understanding of seeking and use of digital information.

2. Significance of the problem.

3. Design of the study.

4. Qualifications of the investigator(s).

5. Realism of the timetable.

Amount

The grant consists of up to $6,000 for research and up to $1,000 for travel to a national or international conference to present the results of the research. Expenditures must directly support research; the award does not cover indirect costs or overhead. Half of the research amount will be paid within one month of the selection of the awardee; the remaining half will be provided approximately six months later upon the receipt of a satisfactory progress report as determined by the Ingenta Award Jury Chair and the ALA staff liaison to the Ingenta Award Jury.

The annual international conference and course Libraries in the Digital
Age (LIDA) addresses the changing and challenging environment for
libraries and information systems and services in the digital world. Since
its inception in 2000, LIDA has emphasized the examination of contemporary
problems, intriguing advances, innovative approaches and solutions. Each
year a different and ‘hot’ theme is addressed, divided in two parts; the
first part covers research and development and the second part addresses
advances in applications and practice. LIDA brings together researchers,
educators, practitioners, and developers from all over the world in a
forum for personal exchanges, discussions, and learning, made easier by
being held in memorable locations.

Themes LIDA 2008
Part I: Education and training in digital libraries

In a relatively short period of time, spanning less than two decades or
so, digital libraries became a global phenomenon, characterized by an
accelerated, explosive growth. Digital libraries are a subject of great
many activities worldwide. These include diverse practical applications,
research and development (R&D) on many fronts, continuing innovation,
policy formulations, management changes, and more. A number of fields are
involved, among the most prominent being information science,
librarianship, and computer science.
Considerable and rapidly growing amounts of funds are spent on practical
applications in building and operating a variety of digital library
collections, components and service and on R&D in digital libraries. Many
commercial enterprises are providing digital resources and software for
digital libraries. This all creates demands for well educated and trained
professionals in these areas.
However, the education and training for digital libraries is most often
based on apprentiship and practical courses and conferences without
receiving the same attention (and resources) of digital libraries
applications and other areas mentioned. A number of institutions are
teaching digital libraries modules and courses, or beginning to, and
struggling with this relatively new and volatile educational area. Many
practitioners are finding it hard to learn more and to keep up.
The goal of the first part of LIDA 2008 is to explore efforts, concepts
and ideas related to education and training of professionals, dealing with
the academic quality standards and practical training requirements for
digital libraries and in variety of fields and contexts related to
knowledge, values and skills needed for digital librarians. The general
aim is to help further development of current efforts, as well as
development of frameworks within which diverse efforts could be compared,
evaluated, and improved.

Contributions are invited covering the following topics (types described
below):
•knowledge, values and skills of the digital librarian to be reflected in
educational offerings
•conceptual frameworks and methodological approaches to digital library
education
•instructional design, development, and evaluation of programs of study
and specialization for digital librarians in a variety of schools and on
different levels – existing and proposed
•convergence and place of digital library education in broader curricula
of library and information science, computer science, and other fields;
impact of digital library education on other parts of the curriculum
•examples of good practices of specific courses (or sequence of
courses)and programs related to various aspects of digital libraries and
digital library technology; examples of various modes of delivery
•continuing education and training in digital libraries oriented toward
practicing professionals
•student evaluation of digital library education, as well as expectations
and perceptions of professionals in continuing education courses and
efforts
•international aspects and cooperative opportunities in digital library
education
•benchmarking and evaluation of educational and training programs in
digital libraries
•cultural and social elements in digital library education.

Part II: Reference in digital environments

As access to electronic information through library Web pages has
proliferated in recent years, an increasing number of libraries have added
digital reference assistance to their list of user services. E-mail
reference has become an expected venue for asking reference questions,
having been included among the suite of information services for over 20
years. Live chat reference services are relatively new-comers, but have
already been successfully operating for over 10 years. Information seekers
are increasingly turning to virtual reference (also known as digital
reference) for the anonymity and convenience of remote access and for the
extended hours of operation, since many services operate 24/7/365. An
increasing number of libraries and information centers are now
experimenting with Instant Messaging, Text Messaging (SMS), and other
emerging modes for offering reference services to increasingly tech savvy
library users. Web 2.0 applications are opening new vistas for digital
library services including reference blogs and wikis. Digital reference
desks are appearing in virtual worlds such as Second Life. Although the
proliferation of these alternative methods for service delivery highlights
the need for research focused on understanding users and staff behavior
and impact on issues of satisfaction and success, their assessment poses
new challenges for researchers.

The goal of the second part of LIDA 2008 is to explore the totality of the
virtual reference environment (including live chat, e-mail, IM, and Web
2.0 reference initiatives) and its relationship to digital libraries.
Special attention will be on the evaluation of virtual reference services
from a variety of research perspectives and approaches. The general aim is
to concentrate on scholarship that increases our understanding of the
needs, interests, and experiences of users as well as
librarians/information providers in the context of virtual reference.

Invited are contributions (types described below) covering the following
topics:
•evaluation of various modes of digital library services
•application of theories and models in study of users and use of virtual
reference
•application of theories and user information needs assessments for design
and development of digital reference systems
•assessment of the decision making process for users who choose virtual
reference over other modes (e.g., face-to-face, phone)
•advantages and disadvantages of different virtual reference modes •the
role of knowledge databases in digital reference
•sustainability and cost-effectiveness of virtual reference services
•evaluation of virtual reference consortia and comparison of service
models
•benchmarking service quality and development of evaluation standards in
virtual reference
•evaluation of advantages and disadvantages of different virtual reference
modes
•assessment of the quality of interpersonal communication in virtual
reference
•studies of accuracy and efficiency in virtual reference
•explorations of question negotiation in virtual environments
•issues in archiving digital reference questions.

Types of contributions

Invited are the following types of contributions:
1. Papers: research studies and reports on practices and advances that
will be presented at the conference and included on the conference Web
site. Papers of up to 4000 words in length should be submitted, following
the American Psychological Association (APA) style, followed, among
others, by the Journal of the American Society for Information Science and
Technology (JASIST) and Information Processing & Management (IP&M). The
papers will be refereed. All accepted contributions will be published in
on-line proceedings, as well as provided in the conference kit.
2. Posters: short graphic presentations on research, studies, advances,
examples, practices, or preliminary work that will be presented in a
special poster session. Awards will be given for Best Poster and Best
Student Poster. Proposals for posters should be submitted as a short, one
or two- page paper.
3. Demonstrations: live examples of working projects, services,
interfaces, commercial products, or developments-in-progress that will be
presented during the conference in specialized facilities or presented in
special demonstration sessions. These should involve some aspect of users
and use. Proposals for demonstration should provide short description and
a URL address, if available.
4. Workshops: two to four-hour sessions that will be tutorial and
educational in nature. Workshops will be presented before and after the
main part of the conference and will require separate fees, to be shared
with workshop organizers. Proposals for workshops should include a short
description, with indication of level and potential audience.
5. PhD Forum: short presentations by PhD students, particularly as related
to their dissertation, in a session organized by the European Chapter of
the American Society for Information Science and Technology (EC/ASIST);
help and responses by a panel of educators.

For papers and workshops: 15 January 2008. Acceptance by 15 February 2008.
For demonstrations and posters: 1 February 2008. Acceptance by 1 March
2008.
Final submission for all accepted papers and posters: 15 March 2008.

Invitation to institutions
We are inviting libraries, information agencies, professional
organizations, publishers, and service providers to consider participation
at LIDA by providing a demonstration, workshop, or exhibit about their
products, services or advances, or by presenting a paper or poster about
their activities, as related to themes. Sponsorship of an event is also
invited. Institutions can benefit as well: we will provide course
materials to participants so that they can communicate and transfer topics
of interest to their institution. Thus, we are organizing LIDA to reach a
wider audience.

The first part of LIDA 2008 will be held in Dubrovnik and for the second
part the conference will move to island Mljet, less than a two-hour ride
from Dubrovnik on a fast catamaran. Pre-conference workshops are planned
for 26 May 2008 in Dubrovnik and post-conference workshops for 31 May 2008
on Mljet.

Dubrovnik, Croatia is recognized as one of the World Cultural Heritage
sites by UNESCO. It is a walled city, preserved as it existed in medieval
times. A beautiful natural location on the Adriatic Sea, a lavish
architecture of squares, palaces, and churches, small, intriguing
hill-hugging streets, pedestrian-only traffic within the walls, outings to
the enchanting near-by islands - all these and more combine to make

Mljet is one of the most enchanting islands in the Adriatic, a sea that
abounds with beautiful islands to start with. Hotel Odisej

vegetation surrounding three inland lakes, a small island with a monastery
in the middle lake, paths for walking, and spots for swimming in the blue
and green sea.
